Causes of Blurry, Hazy Vision and How to Manage It in Daily Life
It is not uncommon to experience blurred vision when you first wake up in the morning or after spending a long time looking at your smartphone late at night. In today’s digital world, we are constantly surrounded by devices such as computers and smartphones, making it easy for our eyes to become extremely fatigued.
If your vision continues to feel blurry or hazy even after taking a short break, dry eye disease may be one of the first conditions to consider. When the tear film becomes unstable, the surface of the eye may no longer remain smooth, causing light to scatter and making your vision appear blurred or shimmering.
Major Eye Diseases That Should Not Be Neglected and Important Precautions
If visual disturbances persist for a prolonged period beyond simple eye fatigue or dryness, an underlying ophthalmic condition should be considered. One common example is cataracts, a condition in which the lens gradually becomes cloudy, causing the entire field of vision to appear blurred, as though viewed through a fog. Because cataracts are often painless in the early stages, they are frequently mistaken for age-related presbyopia and left untreated. However, if treatment is delayed, vision can deteriorate significantly. Therefore, regular ophthalmologic examinations are essential.
In addition, potentially serious conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration often begin with subtle symptoms, such as mild blurred vision or a sensation of having something in the eye. In particular, if part of the visual field appears dark or blocked, or if straight lines appear distorted, these symptoms should not simply be attributed to eye fatigue. It is safest to seek immediate evaluation by an ophthalmologist for an accurate examination.
Daily Eye Care Habits for Maintaining Clear Vision
Maintaining healthy eyes and relieving eye fatigue requires consistent daily habits. When using digital devices, it is recommended to take a break of at least five minutes after every 50 minutes of work and look at a distant object outside the window to help relax the eye muscles. Make a conscious effort to blink frequently to keep the surface of the eyes adequately moist, and use preservative-free artificial tears when necessary.
Before going to bed, using a warm eye mask or applying a warm compress may help activate the oil glands in the eyelids and effectively reduce tear evaporation. When going outdoors, protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that provide UV protection. It may also be beneficial to consume nutrients associated with eye health, such as lutein and astaxanthin.
By consistently incorporating these eye-care practices into your daily routine, you can help reduce blurred, hazy, or uncomfortable vision and maintain clearer, more comfortable eyesight.
